Gulfstream Race 2 – 3/22

Everyone loves claiming races.

Well, no, most lower-level claiming races are awful to handicap. Here is an attempt at one though.

1) Behzad’s Pride (3-1) – On speed figures, he is kind of average. But, this 4-year-old gelding does switch to the John Servis barn, so an improvement might come.

2) Flashing Cat (9-5) – Nothing looks too wrong with his form, although it is questionable whether 9-5 is a fair deal if he stays at that number. Note the trainer hits at a 28-percent win rate at Gulfstream.

3) Starship Apollo (2-1) – Trusting a horse who just got claimed from Jorge Navarro into a less successful barn is always a good idea (not). This 4-year-old colt just prevailed over Flashing Cat one start ago. Without Navarro, is he the same?

4) Rancho (20-1) – Not only is this 7-year-old gelding slow on speed figures, the trainer is 0 for 18 at Gulfstream. This impossible horse offers few good angles.

5) Hy Quality Prince (4-1) – Gunnevera’s stablemate just missed in a one-mile affair recently. Note the hot fractions. For most of the race, he kept closer to the pace than the eventual winner Tiz Bobby. This spot is a little easier. The top choice.

6) Wild Mongolia (20-1) – The past performances simply show nothing encouraging, except for the fact he’s a decent turf horse maybe.

Hy Quality Prince owns the advantage on both speed figures and pace setup. He should get the job done.
